Woodworm in Artworks: Early Detection and Effective Treatment

Woodworm can pose a serious threat to wooden artworks. These tiny insect larvae burrow deep into the wood, gradually weakening it.

.

How to Recognize Woodworm

A woodworm infestation is often identified by small round holes in the wood surface, fine wood dust (frass) beneath the affected object, and sometimes even soft chewing sounds. If these signs are visible, it is crucial to act quickly, as the damage can continue to spread and severely weaken the artwork.

Traditional Treatment with Insecticides

A commonly used method to combat woodworm is the application of insecticides. These chemical agents are applied to the wood to kill the larvae. While this can be effective, it has several drawbacks: it is harmful to health, can leave residues in the material, and may even have undesirable effects on delicate artworks.

Anoxia: A Material-Friendly Solution

A much safer and more effective method for artworks is the Anoxia method. In this process, the affected object is wrapped in a special foil, creating an airtight cushion. The oxygen inside this sealed environment is gradually replaced with a different gas (like argon gas), causing the woodworm larvae to die naturally. This process leaves no chemical residues and is entirely safe for the artwork. The structure, paint layers, and overall condition of the object remain intact, making this method particularly suitable for valuable artworks and antiques.

Restoration and Conservation in My Studio

While I do not personally carry out woodworm treatments, I work closely with an experienced colleague who performs this process safely and professionally. This treatment can be carried out directly in my studio, eliminating any extra transport or inconvenience for you. Your artwork remains in a controlled environment, ensuring a seamless process without additional logistical concerns.

Additionally, artworks affected by woodworm often suffer from other damage, such as cracks, flaking paint, or structural weakening. In my studio, I specialize in the restoration and conservation of wooden artworks, carefully working to preserve their aesthetic and structural integrity.

Does your artwork suffer from woodworm and other damage? Feel free to contact me. Together, we will determine the best approach to restore your valuable piece to its optimal condition!
